Distance and travel time between Istanbul and Ankara

The distance by road is approximately 450 kilometers. Depending on traffic conditions and departure time, the journey takes between 4.5 and 5.5 hours. The city departure point (European side or Asian side) can affect the total time by around 20-30 minutes.

For early morning departures (06:00-07:00), both Istanbul and Ankara city traffic are still relatively light, so the total travel time is usually close to the lower end of the range.

Plane or road?

On a 450-kilometer route, the actual time difference between flying and traveling by road is smaller than it may seem. When traveling by plane, the following steps add to the total time: getting to the airport (45-60 minutes on the Istanbul side), check-in and security screening (the recommended time for domestic flights is 1.5-2 hours), flight time (about 1 hour), and baggage claim plus transportation from the airport to the city center after landing (45-60 minutes from Ankara Esenboğa to the city center).

When these steps are added together, air travel can reach around 4-4.5 hours in total — close to the upper end of VIP transfer by road. The difference works in favor of flying if only one person is traveling, while it narrows in favor of road travel if two or more people are going in the same direction; additionally, road travel allows for an intermediate stop (such as adding another meeting), which is not possible on a plane.

The final decision depends on the number of travelers, the amount of luggage, and whether additional stops are needed along the route.

Additional stop within Ankara

If, after arriving in Ankara, you need to go to more than one address rather than a single point (for example, hotel first, then ministry, then back to the hotel), this can be specified during booking and planned within a single transfer.
